![]() ![]() I could probably write a paper on GRRM's use of metaphor in this book, but I'll try to refrain. You get interesting contrasts between the vampiric thirst and the contagion of yellow fever, and there's also some fascinating metaphors comparing Joshua to the Mississippi and Abner to a steamboat. The strongest part of the writing is all the metaphors worked into the stories. Dialogue has an appropriately historical feel without being too ye-olde-timey. The writing style is competent, seamlessly pulling the reader between plot points without distracting them. Martin creates a creeping sense of menace that works very well for the subject matter. ![]() The Writing: Altogether, the prose is nice, but not stellar. But I just had too much to say about this book. Unfortunately, the strong start fades out into an average ending.Ī disclaimer: This one's really long. The shorter length means GRRM doesn't really have room to display his signature style, but it was still very competently written. This one also qualifies for the "Backlist" square, and technically the "Has Chapter Titles" square.įevre Dream is a decent, solidly entertaining story about vampires on a steamboat. ![]() For the "Gothic Fantasy" bingo square, I decided to read Fevre Dream by George R. ![]()
